Centrelink online account help - Manage the money you owe

Instructions on how to manage your Centrelink debt with your Centrelink online account.

If you have a debt with Centrelink you’ll need to pay us back. Read more about owing money and how to pay it back.

Keep in mind, you can't bring cash, cheques or money orders into our service centres to repay debts.

If you’re paying your debt by either:

  • Credit or debit card, you can complete this process in one go.
  • BPAY or Post Billpay, you can use this process to get your payment reference details.

Step 1: get started

Sign in to myGov and select Centrelink.

Select MENU from the homepage.

Select Payments and Claims, followed by Manage payments, and Money you owe.

The Money You Owe page shows:

  • the Total amount owing
  • your Next repayment amount, if you have a payment arrangement in place
  • the Debt ID number
  • any interest included
  • your next repayment due date
  • the payment you were getting when you got the debt
  • the reason for the debt
  • the total amount of the debt
  • the amount you’ve already paid
  • details of previous debts you’ve repaid.

If you want to:

  • make a payment, go to Step 2
  • update your payment arrangement, go to Step 3
  • set up a new payment arrangement, go to Step 4.

Step 2: make a payment

Select Make a payment.

If you need help, select Help.

You may be able to use our digital assistant for help. You can do this by selecting I’m here to help. I can give you more information for each question so you know what to do.

Select Begin to make a payment.

Select How do you want to make a payment. You can select either:

  • Credit or Debit card
  • BPAY or Post Billpay.

Then select Next.

If you select Credit or Debit card, make sure you have your card with you.

If you select BPAY or Post Billpay, we’ll give you the details you can print. Use the details to make a payment directly from your Australian bank account or any Australia Post store.

In this example, we’ll select Credit or Debit card.

Select either:

  • Pay total amount to pay all of what’s owing
  • Pay other amount to make a part payment.

When you select Pay other amount to make a part payment, you need to tell us how much you’re going to pay. Enter the amount you want to pay in dollars and cents, then select Next.

Select Continue to check the information about your payment.

Select Begin to give us your credit or debit card details.

If you’re going to pay by BPAY or Post Billpay, we’ll give you a barcode or reference details. You can use these details to make your payment.

On the Card details page, enter all of your details, including the:

  • Cardholder name
  • Card number
  • Expiry date on the card, month and year
  • Security code (CCV), the 3 numbers on the back of the card.

If the details you’ve entered are correct, select I confirm the payment details entered are correct, followed by Pay now.

If the details are wrong, enter them again to make changes.

Get receipt

We’ll give you a receipt when you make a payment. Make a note of the Receipt ID for your records.

Select either:

  • Return to Money You Owe to go back to the Money You Owe page
  • Save your receipt to keep a copy of your receipt.

Step 2h illustration

This is the end of how to make a payment.

If you want to:

  • update your payment arrangement, go to Step 3
  • set up a new payment arrangement, go to Step 4
  • sign out, go to Step 5.

Step 3: update your payment arrangement

On the Money You Owe page, select Edit Payment arrangement.

You won’t be able to use edit payment arrangement if any of the following applies to you:

  • you have more than 1 payment arrangement in place
  • the balance of your debt is less than 5 cents.

You’ll need to contact us on 1 of the following phone lines to discuss your repayments:

To edit your payment arrangement, select Begin.

Tell us how you want us to deduct the money.

You can only deduct money from payments you get from us. You may get more than 1 payment from us. If so, you’ll need to choose which payment to use to pay back your debt.

You’ll need to select the payment you want to use and then select Next. In this example we’re selecting to use the Age Pension payment to repay the debt.

Enter the amount you want to have deducted. This is the amount you’ll pay each fortnight. Enter the amount using dollars, cents and a decimal point. Then select Next.

If we don't accept the amount you put in, you’ll need to enter a higher amount. If you can’t make a higher repayment, call us to work out an amount you can pay.

When we accept the amount you put in, select Continue.

Review and submit

To review and submit an edit to your payment arrangement, select Begin.

Your payment arrangement details will display, including:

  • Type of arrangement
  • Payment amount
  • Benefit type.

Make sure the details are correct.

Select either:

  • Edit details to make changes if the details are wrong.
  • Next if the details are correct.

Read the declaration. If you understand and agree with the declaration, select I have read and agree with the above conditions, then Submit.

Get receipt

We’ll give you a receipt to let you know your payment arrangement has been changed.

Select either:

  • Save your receipt to keep a copy of your receipt
  • Information you provided to view your new repayment amount and end date.
  • Return to Money You Owe to go back to the Money You Owe page.

Step 3j illustration

This is the end of how to update your payment arrangement.

If you want to:

  • make a payment, go to Step 2
  • set up a new payment arrangement, go to Step 4
  • sign out, go to Step 5.

Step 4: set up a new payment arrangement

You won’t be able to set up a new payment arrangement if any of the following applies to you:

  • you already have a payment arrangement in place
  • the balance of your debt is less than 5 cents.

You’ll need to contact us on 1 of the following phone lines to discuss your repayments:

On the Money You Owe page, select Set up payment arrangement.

If you need help, select Help.

You may be able to use our digital assistant for help. You can do this by selecting I’m here to help. I can give you more information for each question so you know what to do.

Select Begin to set up a payment arrangement.

Choose how you want to make your repayments.

Select 1 of the following:

  • Deductions from your payment type if you get a current payment and want money taken from it before you’re paid.
  • Direct debit to have payments taken out of your account automatically.
  • Make regular payments myself to arrange manual payments weekly, fortnightly or monthly with a credit or debit card, BPAY or Post Billpay.

Then select Next.

In this example, we’ll select the Automatic repayments option of Direct debit, then select Next.

Choose how often you want to make repayments. You can select either:

  • Weekly.
  • Fortnightly.
  • Monthly.

Then select Next.

Select the calendar icon and enter the date you want to start making payments. You’ll need to include the day, month and year. Then select Next.

Enter the amount you want to have deducted. This is the amount you’ll pay each fortnight. Enter the amount using dollars, cents and a decimal point. Then select Next.

If we don't accept the amount you put in, you’ll need to enter a higher amount. If you can’t make a higher repayment, call us to work out an amount you can pay.

Step 4g illustration

If we accept the amount you put in, we’ll either :

  • ask you for your Australian bank account details
  • ask you to choose which payment we’ll deduct your repayment from
  • give you the reference details to pay by BAY or Post Billpay.

When you choose to arrange a debit from your bank account, enter your Australian account details including your:

  • Account name
  • BSB
  • Account number.

Select Next.

Make sure your answers are correct, then select Continue.

Review and Submit

To review and submit your new payment arrangement, select Begin.

We’ll give you a summary of the details you’ve given us. Make sure the details are correct.

Select either:

  • Edit details to make changes if the details are wrong
  • Next if the details are correct.

Read the declaration. If you understand and agree with the declaration, select I have read and agree with the above conditions, then Submit.

Get receipt

We’ll give you a receipt to let you know your new payment arrangement is set up.

Select either:

  • Save your receipt to keep a copy of your receipt
  • Information you provided to view your new repayment amount and end date.
  • Return to Money You Owe to go back to the Money You Owe page.

Step 4m illustration

This is the end of the how to set up a new payment arrangement. Go to Step 5 to sign out.

Step 5: sign out

From your homepage, you can complete other transactions or select the myGov icon to return to myGov.
