Centrelink online account help - Make an advance repayment

Instructions on how to repay your advance payment through your Centrelink online account.


The screenshots in this guide are from a computer. The screen layout will look different if you are using a mobile device.

Step 1: get started

Sign into myGov and select Centrelink.

Select MENU from the homepage.

Select Payments and Claims, followed by Manage payments and Manage advance payments.

Or, select Manage advance payments from Favourite services.

You can only do this if you have it saved as a favourite service.

Step 2: make a repayment

The Advance Payments summary page has information about your current and previous advances.

If you owe money on an advance payment, the summary page will show:

  • the advance amount you were paid
  • how much you’ve repaid
  • the outstanding amount
  • your fortnightly repayment amount
  • when your final repayment is due
  • when you can apply for your next possible advance.
If you need help, select the question mark icon.

To pay some or all of the money you owe, select Make a payment.

If you have more than 1 amount owing, select the advance you want to make a repayment to.

Enter how much you want to pay in Australian dollars and cents, including the decimal point. After you’ve entered these details, select Next.

If you repay the advance in full, it doesn’t mean we’ll give you another advance straight away.

If you understand and agree with the declaration, select I acknowledge that paying off an advance today may mean I am not entitled to another advance immediately. Then select Next.

Choose how you want to make a payment.

Select Post Billpay to make a payment at any Australia Post outlet. You can pay with cash, a debit or credit card, cheque or money order. You’ll need to either:

  • print a Post Billpay barcode
  • save the barcode to the photo gallery on your mobile device.

You can only use the barcode for this payment.

If you pay with cash or card, your record will update instantly. Payments made with cheque or money order may take up to 7 working days to process.

After you choose a payment option, select Next.

In this example, we’ll make a payment with a debit card.

Select Credit or debit card, then select Next.


  • Back, if you need to change any details
  • Cancel, if you don’t want to continue or need to start again.

On the Payment information page, enter the:

  • Cardholder name
  • Card number
  • Expiry date on the card, month and year
  • Security code (CCV), the 3 numbers on the back of the card.

If the information you’ve entered is correct, select I confirm the payment details entered are correct, then select Pay now.

Step 3: get your receipt

We’ll give you a receipt to let you know we received your payment. Please make a note of the Receipt ID for your records.


  • Information you provided, to view a summary of the details you’ve given us
  • Return to home, to go back to your Advance Payments page.

Select Home to go back to your online account homepage.

Step 4: sign out

From your homepage, you can complete other transactions or select the myGov icon to return to myGov.

For your privacy and security, sign out when you’ve finished using your myGov account.
