You can add someone 15 or older to your card online if you meet all of these requirements:
- you’re living in Australia and you’re an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen or you have a permanent resident visa
- you’re 15 or older
- your name on your current Medicare card has less than 25 characters
- someone else doesn’t act on your behalf for Medicare purposes
- you’re not in the care of a state or territory child protection authority.
You can invite someone if they meet all of these requirements:
- they’re 15 or older
- they’re living in Australia and are an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or have a permanent resident visa
- they’re only on one Medicare card
- their name on their current Medicare card has less than 25 characters
- someone else doesn’t act on their behalf for Medicare purposes
- they’re not in the care of a state or territory child protection authority.
If this isn’t your situation, you can complete an application to copy or transfer from one Medicare card to another form.

Step 1: sign in
Sign in to myGov and select Medicare.
If you’re using the app, open it and enter your myGov PIN.
On your homepage, select My card.
We’ll display your current Medicare card.
Select Add someone to my card.
We’ll display information about how we can help people with family and domestic violence concerns.
Select Close to continue.
Step 2: before you start
We’ll display information about what you need from the person you want to invite.
Select Next to continue.
Step 3: tell us who you’re inviting
Enter the following details about the person you want to invite:
- their Medicare card number and Individual Reference Number (IRN), the number next to the person’s name on their Medicare card
- their full name exactly as it appears on their Medicare card
- their date of birth.
Then select Next.
Step 4: confirm or update your address
When the person accepts your invite, they’ll be able to see your postal address. This is so they know where we’ll send their new card.
We’ll send 2 new Medicare cards to your postal address.
To update your postal address, select Edit.
When your postal address is correct, select Next.
Step 5: confirm or update your bank details
We’ll pay your Medicare benefits into your bank account.
We won’t show your bank details to the person you’re inviting.
To update your bank details, select Edit.
When your bank details are correct, select Next.
Step 6: review and submit
Review your details.
To make changes, select Edit.
When your details are correct, read the declaration.
Then select either:
- Submit to accept the declaration and create an invite code
- Cancel to stop your request.
If you cancel, we’ll stop your request to create an invite code.
We’ll only save your address and bank details if you updated them.
Step 7: you’ve created an invite code
You’ll see the invite code and information about what the person you invited needs to do.
Select the copy icon to copy this information to your device. You can send this information to the person you’ve invited, using your preferred messaging app such as SMS or email.
You’ll need to give this information to the person you’re inviting. It isn’t sent to them automatically. Your invite code is valid for 7 days.
We’ll let you know if they accept your invite.
To return to your homepage, select Home.
Withdraw an invite
Your invite expires in 7 days. You can withdraw your invite before it’s accepted.
To withdraw an invite from your homepage select My card, followed by Manage my card invites.
Select the invite you want to withdraw.
Select Withdraw invite.
Select Yes to withdraw the invite.
To return to your homepage, select Home.
Step 8: sign out
From your homepage, you can complete other transactions or select the Return to myGov icon to go back to your myGov account.
For your privacy and security, sign out when you’ve finished using your myGov account.
