To be eligible to claim for southbound goods under the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme (TFES) your business must be located in Tasmania and mainly engaged in one of the following industries:
- manufacturing
- mining
- agriculture
- forestry
- fishing.
Manufacturing and mining businesses must:
- incur and pay the freight costs across Bass Strait
- only claim for raw materials and equipment shipped from mainland Australia to Tasmania
- use the raw materials and equipment in your manufacturing or mining processes.
Agriculture, forestry and fishing businesses must:
- incur and pay the freight costs across Bass Strait
- only claim for material inputs, machinery, implements or equipment shipped from mainland Australia to Tasmania
- use the material inputs, machinery, implements or equipment in your agriculture, forestry or fishing business activities.
You’re not eligible if any of the following apply:
- you’re a freight forwarder
- you’re a shipping company
- you arrange or advise on shipping
- you advise on TFES
- you set the price of shipping.
You’re also not eligible if you’re in a non-arm’s length relationship with the freight forwarder or shipping company. If you’re not sure if your business has a non-arm’s length relationship, you can call our Tasmanian Transport Schemes team for more information.
Register
You need to register for TFES and have your eligibility confirmed by us before you submit your first claim.
You can register at any time, including before you’re ready to ship goods.
To apply to claim southbound shipments, download and fill in the TFES - Registration and change of details form. In Question 13, select the Southbound option.
When you’ve completed the form, send it to us using the instructions on the form.
Once you’ve sent us your registration form, we’ll determine if you’re eligible to claim southbound shipments. If we have questions about your application, we’ll contact you.
You’ll get a letter telling you the outcome.
If you’re eligible to claim, we’ll send you an email with:
- your logon ID
- your temporary password
- instructions about how to claim TFES.
Updating your details
We recommend you update your details as soon as they change. This includes:
- your bank account
- your signatories, if you nominated them
- your business details
- your business activities.
You can update your details by downloading and completing the TFES - Registration and change of details form.
You should also complete this form if you haven’t claimed TFES for more than 5 years.
When you’ve finished filling in the form, send it to us using the instructions on the form.
