TFES for northbound goods

Your business can get financial assistance with the cost of shipping goods from Tasmania to the Australian mainland through the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme.

To be eligible to claim northbound shipments under the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme (TFES) all of the following must apply. You must:

  • incur and pay the freight costs across Bass Strait
  • be the Tasmanian producer of the goods being shipped, or the purchaser of the goods being shipped
  • be shipping eligible northbound goods.

You’re not eligible if any of the following apply:

  • you’re a freight forwarder
  • you’re a shipping company
  • you arrange or advise on shipping
  • you advise on TFES
  • you set the price of shipping

You’re also not eligible if you’re in a non-arm’s length relationship with the freight forwarder or shipping company. If you’re not sure if your business has a non-arm’s length relationship, you can call our Tasmanian Transport Schemes team for more information.

Register

You need to register for TFES and have your eligibility confirmed by us before you submit your first claim.

You can register at any time, including before you’re ready to ship goods.

To apply to claim northbound shipments, download and fill in the TFES - Registration and change of details form. In Question 13, select the Northbound or Other Markets options.

When you’ve completed the form, send it to us using the instructions on the form.

Once you’ve sent us your registration form, we’ll determine if you’re eligible to claim northbound shipments. If we have questions about your application, we’ll contact you.

You’ll get a letter telling you the outcome.

If you’re eligible to claim, we’ll send you an email with:

  • your logon ID
  • your temporary password
  • instructions about how to claim TFES.

Updating your details

We recommend you update your details as soon as they change. This includes:

  • your bank account

You can update your details by downloading and filling in the TFES - Registration and change of details form.

You should also complete this form if you haven’t claimed TFES for more than 5 years.
