You may be independent if you worked full time. You must have worked an average of 30 hours a week for at least 18 months within any 2 year period.
Reviewable independence for ABSTUDY
We might consider you as independent under the reviewable criteria.
Independent for ABSTUDY if you’re in a de facto relationship for at least 6 months
You may be independent if you’re in a de facto relationship for at least 6 months.
Independent for ABSTUDY if your parents can’t take care of you
You may be independent if you’re 15 or older and your parents can’t take care of you.
Independent for ABSTUDY if you’re caring for or have custody of another person’s child
You may be independent if you care for or have custody of another person’s dependent child.
Independent for ABSTUDY if it’s unreasonable for you to live at home
You may be independent if you’re unable to live at home with either of your parents due to extreme circumstances.
What to report when you report income to Centrelink
We need to know the gross employment income you and your partner get so we can pay you the right amount.

If you or your partner get income from employment you need to tell us. This is so we can pay you the right amount.
Unscheduled reporting
If your employment income changes, you need to tell us within 14 days. We call this unscheduled reporting, as it can happen any time.
