Express Plus Centrelink mobile app help - manage money you owe

Instructions on how you can manage the money you owe using your Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

 

The screenshots in this guide are from an iOS device. Some screens may look different if you’re using an Android device.

If you have a debt with Centrelink you’ll need to pay us back. Read more about owing money and how to pay it back.

You can't bring cash, cheques or money orders into our service centres to repay debts.

Step 1: get started

From the home screen, select More.

Select Money You Owe.

The Money You Owe screen shows you:

  • your next repayment amount and due date, if you already have an arrangement in place
  • the total amount you owe
  • the amount you’ve already paid.

Select Repayment history to view payments you’ve made.

Select Debt summary to view:

  • the Debt ID number
  • any interest included
  • the payment you were getting when you got the debt
  • the status of the debt
  • the date you got the debt
  • the total amount of the debt
  • the reason for the debt.

To, either:

  • make a payment, go to Step 2
  • update your payment arrangement, go to Step 3
  • set up a new payment arrangement, go to Step 4.

Step 2: make a payment

Select Make a payment.

If you need help, select the question mark icon.

 

Select how you want to make a payment. You can select either:

  • Credit or debit card
  • BPAY
  • Post Billpay.

Then select Next.

When you select Credit or debit card, you’ll need to have your card with you.

When you select BPAY or Post Billpay, we’ll give you the details to make a payment either:

  • straight from your Australian bank account
  • at any Australia Post store.

Select either:

  • Pay total amount, to pay all of what’s owing
  • Pay other amount, to make a part payment.

When you select Pay other amount, you need to tell us how much you’re going to pay. Enter the amount you want to pay in dollars, cents and a decimal point.

Then select Next.

On the Make a payment screen, enter all of your details, including the:

  • Cardholder name
  • Card number
  • Expiry date on the card, month and year
  • Security code (CCV), the 3 numbers on the back of the card.

If the details you’ve entered are correct, select I confirm the payment details entered are correct, then select Pay now.

Get receipt

We’ll give you a receipt when you make a payment. Make a note of the Receipt number for your records.

Select Finish to go back to the Money you owe screen.

To, either:

  • update your payment arrangement, go to Step 3
  • set up a new payment arrangement, go to Step 4
  • sign out, go to Step 5.

Step 3: update your payment arrangement

On the Money you owe screen, select Edit payment arrangement.

You won’t be able to use edit payment arrangement if any of these apply. You:

  • have more than 1 payment arrangement in place
  • don’t get a current payment from us
  • have a debt balance of less than 5 cents
  • only get a Parental Leave Pay payment.

You’ll need to call us to discuss your repayments on either the:

Enter the amount you want to have deducted. This is the amount you’ll pay each fortnight. Enter the amount in dollars and cents using a decimal point. Then select Next.

If we don’t accept the amount you put in, you’ll need to enter a higher amount. We’ll show you the minimum repayment amount. If you can’t make a higher repayment, call us to work out an amount you can pay.

When we accept the amount you submitted, your payment arrangement details will display. This includes:

  • Type of arrangement
  • Repayment amount.

If the details are correct, select Submit.

If the details are wrong, select Cancel and repeat Step 3.

Read the declaration. If you understand and agree with the declaration, select I accept and submit.

Get receipt

We’ll give you a receipt to show your payment arrangement change is successful.

We’ll also confirm your new payment arrangement start and end dates.

Select Finish to go back to the Money you owe screen.

This is the end of the process to update your payment arrangement.

To, either:

  • make a payment, go to Step 2
  • set up a new payment arrangement, go to Step 4
  • sign out, go to Step 5.

Step 4: set up a new payment arrangement

On the Money you owe screen, select Set up payment arrangement.

Read the information about setting up your payment arrangement, then select Next.

Choose how you want to make your repayments.

Select 1 of the following:

  • Automatically deducted from my payment type if you want money taken from your current payment before you’re paid
  • Automatically deducted by Direct Debit to have payments taken straight out of your bank account
  • Make regular payments myself to arrange manual payments weekly, fortnightly or monthly by credit or debit card, BPay or PostBillpay.

In this example, we’ll select the option Automatically deducted by Direct Debit, followed by Next.

Choose how often you want to make repayments.

You can select either:

  • weekly
  • fortnightly
  • monthly.

Then select Next.

Enter the amount you want to have deducted. This is the amount you’ll pay each fortnight. Enter the amount using dollars and cents with a decimal point. Then select Next.

If we can’t accept the amount you put in, you’ll need to enter a higher amount. If you can’t make a higher repayment, call us to work out an amount you can pay.

When we accept the amount you submitted, you need to provide your account details so we can take payments.

Enter your Australian account details including your:

  • Account name
  • BSB
  • Account number.

Then select Next.

Use the date selector to enter the date you want your repayments to start, followed by Done. To select a date, scroll to find the date you want to select.

If the start date is correct, select Next.

Review and submit

We’ll give you a summary of the details you’ve given us. Make sure the details are correct.

If the details are wrong, select Cancel to make changes.

If the details are correct, select Submit.

Read the declaration. If you understand and agree with the declaration, select I accept and submit.

Get receipt

We’ll give you a receipt to let you know your new payment arrangement is successful.

Select Finish to go back to the Money you owe screen.

Select Close to go back to the home screen.

This is the end of the process to set up a new payment arrangement. Go to Step 5 to sign out.

Step 5: sign out

For your privacy and security, Sign out when you’ve finished using the app.

To sign out, select More, followed by Sign out.
