Step 1 - Get ready to apply
To apply for a payment under CAPS, you must complete a CAPS application form. You can download and print it from the Department of Health and Aged Care website.
Payment options
You have the choice of an annual or bi-annual payment from us.
If you choose an annual payment, we’ll pay you at the start of each financial year.
If you choose a bi-annual payment, we’ll pay you in July and January each year.
Depending on when you apply for CAPS, your payment may be outside of the regular payment period. If this happens we’ll pay a portion of your payment right away. Future payments will then be made at regular times. For example, if you apply in October, and you choose a bi-annual payment, we’ll pay you a portion of your regular CAPS payment. Your next payment will be the following January.
Extra documents
You may need to provide extra documents with your application. The application form tells you what these are.
If there’s something missing from your application, we’ll ask you to provide it to us. Read more about providing more information for your application.
Step 2 - Get your registered health professional to complete their part of the form
You need your registered health professional to complete their section of the form.
They need to include their details and information about your condition.
Step 3 - Submit your application
You need to submit your application form and any extra documents to us. You can do this by post or at a service centre.
The postal address is on the form.
Step 4 - Wait for the result
If your application is approved we’ll pay you into the bank account you give us on your form.
If your application is rejected we’ll tell you in writing. You can appeal our decision. To discuss this, contact the CAPS team.
