Accessibility is a winner for myGov app

The myGov app is making it even easier for customers to access government services.

We’ve designed the myGov app to be as accessible for as many people as possible, and these features were recently recognised in a national award!

The myGov app won the Government App of the Year in the 2023 Australian Access Awards, hosted by the Centre for Accessibility Australia. These awards celebrate and acknowledge progress towards digital accessibility, ensuring people with disability can have equal access to technology and the internet.

‘We wanted to ensure that everyone – including people with disability – could use the app if they choose to,’ said Lynne Armstrong from the Connection, Identity and Authentication Branch, who accepted the award on behalf of our agency.

‘The needs of myGov users were at the heart of the design process and the feedback from people with disability during user testing allowed us to refine the app’s features for a better user experience.

‘People who used assistive technologies or the in-built device accessibility functions said the app was easier for them to use than the website, and they were more likely to continue to use it.’

The myGov app works with the accessibility functions of your phone, such as displaying larger text or text-to-speech options. If you’ve got these settings activated on your device, they’ll apply when you use the myGov app.

The app meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1AA and we’re continuing to work towards AAA accessibility, the highest level of web compliance.

We’ll continue to improve the myGov app with new and updated features, while keeping the needs of the people who use it front and centre in the design process.
