To get Parenting Payment you must meet certain criteria.
You can’t claim Parenting Payment before the birth of a child. We only pay one parent or guardian Parenting Payment.
You may not be eligible if you get certain payments from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA). Read more about getting a Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) payment.
If you’re single
To get this payment, you must meet all the following:
- principal carer rules for a child under 14
- mutual obligation requirements after your youngest child turns 6
- residence rules
- the assets test and be under the income limits.
If you have a partner
To get this payment, you must meet all the following:
- principal carer rules for a child under 6
- residence rules
- the assets test and be under the income limits.
If you’re getting Disaster Recovery Allowance
If you’ve lost your job because of a natural disaster, you may be able to claim Parenting Payment. You can make a claim when your Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) or New Zealand DRA ends. Read more about our natural disaster support.

Parenting Payment is a separate payment from Family Tax Benefit and Parental Leave Pay. There are also other payments for families you may be able to get.
Parent Pathways
You can choose to join Parent Pathways, a voluntary support service that can help you identify and achieve your future goals. The service is flexible and tailored to your individual circumstances.
You’ll work with a mentor who will support you during your time with Parent Pathways. You’ll also get tailored advice, guidance and resources in a supportive and safe environment, where your children are always welcome.
