Midwife Professional Indemnity Scheme (MPIS)

The MPIS gives financial help to eligible insurers who provide indemnity to eligible privately practicing midwives.

The Australian Government introduced MPIS legislation on 1 July 2010. It covers 3 schemes:

The MPIS includes a government contribution to help with claims made against privately practicing midwives.

Applications for claims under the MPIS can only be made by Medical Insurance Australia Pty Ltd (MIGA). If you don’t represent MIGA, you can’t apply to claim.

The claim must meet the eligibility requirements. To get a payment under the MPIS you need to submit an application to us.

Relevant legislation

The Midwife Professional Indemnity (Commonwealth Contribution) Scheme Act 2010 is the legislation that applies to the MPIS.
