Manage indemnity insurance

The Medical Indemnity Act 2002 provides financial assistance to help keep medical indemnity insurance premiums affordable for medical practitioners.

Medical Defence Organisations (MDOs) and Medical Indemnity Insurers (MIIs) can make claims under the medical indemnity schemes we administer.

MDOs and MIIs must be incorporated in Australia to participate.

Exceptional Claims Indemnity Schemes (ECS)

Under the ECS the government funds 100% of the costs of a claim made against allied health and medical professionals.

High Cost Claim Indemnity Scheme (HCCS)

Under this scheme the government funds 50% of the costs of a claim that exceeds the HCCS threshold.

Allied Health High Cost Claim Indemnity Scheme (AH HCCS)

Under this scheme the government funds 50% of the costs of a claim that exceeds the AH HCCS threshold.

Incurred But Not Reported Indemnity Scheme (IBNR)

The IBNR helps participating Medical Defence Organisations (MDOs) if they can’t cover their IBNR liabilities.

Midwife Professional Indemnity Scheme (MPIS)

The MPIS gives financial help to eligible insurers who provide indemnity to eligible privately practicing midwives.

Run-Off Cover Indemnity Scheme (ROCS)

This scheme helps Medical Defence Organisations (MDOs) and Medical Indemnity Insurers (MII) cover claims made against medical practitioners who aren’t working.
