Midwife Professional Indemnity Run-Off Cover Scheme (MPIROCS)

This scheme provides secure ongoing insurance for eligible midwives who have ceased private practice.

The government reimburses 100% of eligible claim cost incurred by insurers. A threshold isn’t applicable.

Applications for claims under the Midwife Professional Indemnity Scheme can be made by the insurer, the Medical Insurance Australia Pty Ltd.

To get a payment under the MPIROCS you need to submit an application to us.

A claim may be eligible under the MPIROCS if:

  • the midwife met one or more of the MPIROCS eligibility classes at the time the claim was made against the midwife
  • it’s for an out-of-hospital incident that occurred on or after 1 July 2010
  • it’s for an in-hospital incident that occurred on or after 1 July 2025
  • the midwife has midwife professional indemnity run‑off cover that indemnifies them in relation to the claim.

A claim isn’t eligible under MPIROCS if it’s made against an eligible entity in relation to the

midwife. This includes where the midwife met one or more of the MPIROCS eligibility class.

There are 5 eligibility classes for an eligible midwife under the MPIROCS. They are midwives who have:

  • permanently retired from private medical practice as an eligible midwife
  • not engaged in private practice as an eligible midwife during the previous 3 years
  • temporarily or permanently stopped practicing as an eligible midwife due to maternity
  • stopped practicing as an eligible midwife due to a permanent disability
  • passed away but had been an eligible midwife.

To apply for payment under MPIROCS, use the Midwife Professional Indemnity Run-Off Cover Scheme - Application for Payment form (MO068).

We’ll tell you the outcome of the application by the end of the next month.

You need to let us know if any details of the incident or claim change after you submit your application. This includes, but isn’t limited to if:

  • you recover an amount from a third party that relates to the amount we paid you
  • a judgment or order becomes subject to an appeal or is stayed
  • you withdraw support for the insured person
  • the amount paid is later found to be not payable under the requirements of the scheme.

If you know of an overpayment of any type, you must let us know.

One of the following statutory declarations are required to be submitted in support of the MPIROCS eligibility class:

In addition, one of these medical certificates are required where a midwife has stopped practice due to maternity or disability:
