How we pay it

If you can get ABSTUDY Living Allowance, who we pay it to depends on your circumstances.

We’ll let you know who we’ll pay Living Allowance to when you claim.

You might be able to choose who we pay it to.

Your circumstances Who we pay ABSTUDY Living Allowance to
If you’re any of the following:
  • 18 years or older
  • claiming as an independent
  • a secondary non-school, tertiary, Masters or Doctorate student
  • doing an Australian Apprenticeship.
You.
If you’re 16-17 and a dependent secondary school student living at home.

1 or more of the following:

  • your parent or guardian
  • you, if requested by your parent or guardian
  • you, if your parent or guardian uses it for other purposes like gambling or alcohol.
If you’re under 16, a dependent secondary school student and living away from home.

1 or more of the following:

  • your parent or guardian
  • your boarding school
  • your private board provider, if requested by your parent or guardian
  • your boarding hostel if it’s signatory to the Standard Hostels Agreement.

If you’re going to a boarding school or hostel, we check you’ve started study before we make a payment.

If you’re 16 or over, a dependent secondary school student and living away from home.

1 or more of the following:

  • your parent or guardian
  • you, if requested by your parent or guardian
