If you’re in certain education or employment circumstances

If you're 18 or older and in certain education or employment circumstances, you may be independent for Youth Allowance.

We may consider you independent if you’re 18 or older and not living with or getting financial support from your parents or long-term guardians. This can include financial support from another person who has acted as your parent or guardian on a long-term basis.

Financial support includes help with living expenses, such as:

  • rent or housing costs
  • food and clothing
  • bills or school fees
  • transport costs
  • money given to you regularly.

You also need to meet both of the following:

  • you have worked for 30 hours or more per week for at least 12 months, or for periods totaling at least 12 months
  • you have limited access to education or employment opportunities.

Limited access to education or employment may include if you have not completed year 12 or an equivalent qualification, or you are experiencing circumstances that make it difficult to find a job.

We may ask you to give us proof that you meet the requirements. That may include the following documents:

  • payslips or payroll reports
  • letters from all your employers on company letterheads
  • receipt books or invoices for work done
  • statutory declaration
  • bank statements for all accounts held in your name.

If we assess you as independent and your circumstances change, we may consider you dependent again.
