What you need to do

You have a responsibility to tell us about changes to your rent or accommodation details if you get Rent Assistance.

There are some things you need to do if you get Rent Assistance.

If your circumstances change

To keep getting Rent Assistance, you need to tell us within 14 days if your circumstances change. This includes if you plan to travel outside Australia.

Rent verification

You may need to give us proof of your rent or accommodation details so we can make sure you get the right amount of Rent Assistance. Find out more about verifying your rent details.

Rent review

We may send you a letter asking you to review your rent or accommodation details for Rent Assistance. You can also ask us to review your Rent Assistance details at any time.

Find out more about reviewing your rent details.

Proof of rent arrangements

If you pay eligible rent or accommodation costs, we may ask you for proof of your rent or accommodation arrangements. Find out more about providing proof of your rent arrangements.

Community housing rent

If you pay rent to a community housing organisation that uses the Electronic Verification of Rent (EVoR) online service, they can update your rent amount if it changes within 15 to 50 days of the rent change. If they don’t update the rent amount within this timeframe, you must update it yourself. You must update any other details that change with us yourself.

Ask them if they use EVoR. If they do and you’ve given them consent to tell us using EVoR, you don’t need to tell us if your rent changes. They can help you fill out a consent form.

If you have a Centrepay deduction set up to pay your rent, you’ll need to update your changes with Centrepay yourself. Your housing organisation can’t do that for you.
