If you pay rent to live in a house someone else owns, you may be eligible for Rent Assistance under the private housing rent type.

If you pay rent to live in a house someone else owns, you may get Rent Assistance if you both:

To get Rent Assistance, you may need to give us proof of your rent arrangements. You can do this by giving us a copy of either:

  • your tenancy agreement
  • a Rent Certificate.

If you don’t have a formal tenancy agreement, you can ask your landlord or real estate agent to sign a Rent Certificate to prove your rental arrangements.

If you’re renting a room in private accommodation, this is considered lodging. Find out more about board and lodging.

If you move house or your rent amount changes, you must tell us within 14 days. Find out more about a change of circumstances when you get Rent Assistance, including how to tell us about the change.
