You need to meet certain criteria to get Austudy if you're a student or Australian Apprentice.
You’ll need to meet all of the following:
- residence rules
- an income test
- an assets test
Keep in mind, we’ve temporarily waived some waiting periods due to coronavirus (COVID-19). Read more about upcoming changes during COVID-19.
You must be both:
- 25 or older
- studying full time in an approved course at an approved institution.
You must be all of the following:
- 25 or older
- registered with the Australian Apprenticeship scheme

If you’re getting Youth Allowance as a student or Australian Apprentice at the time you turn 25, you won’t move to Austudy. You’ll keep getting Youth Allowance until you finish your current course or apprenticeship.
Meet some of our students
We have 8 examples of people with different circumstances who can get student payments.
Read more about student profiles to see if they match your situation.
We use income tests to see if you’re eligible for a payment and work out how much you’ll get.
We use the assets test to help us work out if you can be paid an allowance and how much you'll get.
You must study an approved course at an approved education provider to get Youth Allowance, Austudy, or Pensioner Education Supplement.
Most people need to study full time to get Austudy or Youth Allowance as a student. To work out if you’re full time you need to know your study load.
The amount of Austudy you get depends on how much you earn.
