Who can get it

You need to meet eligibility requirements to get ABSTUDY.

To get ABSTUDY, you must be all of the following:

  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian descent
  • identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian
  • accepted as such by the community in which you live or have lived
  • an Australian citizen and normally live in Australia
  • covered under 1 of the 7 ABSTUDY Awards
  • be studying an approved course or doing an Australian Apprenticeship.

You can’t get ABSTUDY if you’re getting other financial help to study. For example, an income support payment.

Keep in mind, we’ve temporarily removed the assets test due to coronavirus (COVID-19) from 23 March 2020 until 24 September 2020. From 25 September 2020 you won’t be eligible for payment if your assets are over the allowable limit. Read more about upcoming changes during COVID-19.
