Who can get it
You need to meet eligibility requirements to get ABSTUDY.
To get ABSTUDY, you must be all of the following:
- Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian descent
- identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian
- accepted as such by the community in which you live or have lived
- an Australian citizen and normally live in Australia
- covered under 1 of the 7 ABSTUDY Awards
- be studying an approved course or doing an Australian Apprenticeship.
You can’t get ABSTUDY if you’re getting other financial help to study. For example, an income support payment.

ABSTUDY Policy Manual

If you apply for ABSTUDY, we’ll assess you as being dependent or independent for payment.
You can get ABSTUDY Living Allowance or ABSTUDY Pensioner Education Supplement for a certain amount of study. We call this limits of assistance.
You can get ABSTUDY Living Allowance or ABSTUDY Pensioner Education Supplement for a certain period of time. We call this reasonable time.
We check income and assets to see if you can get some ABSTUDY payments and how much you might get.
You may get a higher rate of ABSTUDY if you need to live away from home to study or do your Australian Apprenticeship.

If you study by distance education, you need to do an approved course with an approved education provider.
