How we pay it

These are some examples of how you can get Incidentals Allowance.

Example of a payment over a 2 year course

In March 2019, Bruce was granted ABSTUDY for a Bachelor of Engineering. He started studying on 1 March 2019 and will finish on 21 April 2020.

In 2019, he automatically got an Incidentals Allowance payment of $599.30 at the start of his course in March. This is because he’ll be studying for more than 24 weeks in 2019.

In 2020 he'll automatically get the 12 to 16 weeks Incidentals Allowance payment up to 4 weeks before he returns to study. This is because he’ll be studying for 12 weeks in 2020.

In February 2019, Jordan was granted ABSTUDY for a 3 year Bachelor of Arts.

In 2019 he got an Incidentals Allowance payment of $599.30 at the start of his course. This is because he’ll be studying for more than 24 weeks in 2019.

In 2020 and 2021 he'll automatically get Incidentals Allowance for 2020 and 2021. This is because his course is longer than 24 weeks to 1 year.

Example of a payment for more than 1 course at the same time

In 2017, Debra got 2 payments of Incidentals Allowance because she started 2 approved courses.

In January, Debra was granted ABSTUDY to complete a Certificate 2 in Aboriginal Arts. She’ll be studying that course for 20 weeks. She automatically got an Incidentals Allowance payment of $294.90 at the start of her course.

In February, Debra started a second approved course that goes for 15 weeks.

She automatically got another Incidentals Allowance payment of $148.30 at the start of her second course in February. This is because you can get Incidentals Allowance for more than 1 approved course at a time.
