The Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme (TFES) assists with the cost of shipping your goods across Bass Strait.
How much you get depends on all of the following:
- if your goods are domestic or imported goods
- the size of your shipment
- the freight costs you pay.
We’ll let you know in writing how much you’ll get after we assess your claim. You can also view this online.
Shipping domestic goods
These rates only apply to eligible goods manufactured on mainland Australia and shipped to Tasmania across Bass Strait.
How much you can get depends on all the following:
- the date of shipment
- how the goods are shipped
- the size or weight of the shipments
- where the goods are shipped from
- where the goods are shipped to
- the freight costs you paid
- the parts of the overall shipment included in the freight costs paid.
20 foot equivalent unit (TEU)
For goods shipped before 1 July 2025 you can get up to $855 per TEU.
For goods shipped from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2027 you can get up to $1,068.75 per TEU.
We’ll automatically apply the increase to eligible shipments.
Full container or trailer loads (FCL/FTL)
The amount you can get for other size FCL/FTLs depends on the length of the shipping unit.
For example, for goods shipped as a full 12.2m FCL/FTL you can get up to $2,137.50 if shipped from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2027.
Less than full container load (LCL)
The amount you can get for a LCL depends on the net tonnes or m³ you ship.
For goods shipped before 1 July 2025 you can get up to:
- $40.71 per tonne for shipments based on tonnes
- $28.50 per cubic metre for shipments based on m³.
For goods shipped from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2027 you can get up to:
- $50.88 per tonne for shipments based on tonnes
- $35.62 per cubic metre for shipments based on m³.
We’ll automatically apply the increase to eligible shipments.
Shipping imported goods
These rates only apply to eligible imported goods shipped to Tasmania across Bass Strait.
How much you can get depends on how the goods are shipped.
20 foot equivalent unit (TEU)
For goods shipped before 1 July 2025 you can get $700 per TEU.
For goods shipped from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2027 you can get $875 per TEU.
Full container or trailer loads (FCL/FTL)
The amount you can get for other size FCL/FTLs depends on the length of the shipping unit.
For example, for goods shipped as a full 12.2m FCL/FTL you can get $1,750 if shipped between 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2027.
Less than full container load (LCL)
The amount you can get for a LCL depends on the net tonnes or m³ you ship.
For goods shipped before 1 July 2025 you can get:
- $33.33 per tonne for shipments based on tonnes
- $23.33 per cubic metre for shipments based on m³.
For goods shipped from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2027 you can get:
- $41.66 per tonne for shipments based on tonnes
- $29.16 per cubic metre for shipments based on m³.
