Apply for additional provider numbers

You can apply for an additional provider number online or by completing a form.

Medicare provider number applications

Most Medicare provider number applications are taking up to 16 calendar days to process from the date we get your application. Some applications may take longer if the Department of Health and Aged Care need to assess them.

You need to apply for an additional provider number if you work:

  • in a new practice location
  • for a new service at the same location
  • in a new health profession or discipline.

You can apply online for an additional Medicare provider number if you’re any of the following:

  • Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra)-registered allied health professional with limited or general registration
  • non-medical health professional - nurse practitioner, midwife, dentist, dental practitioner or optometrist
  • medical intern who trained in Australia or New Zealand
  • non-Ahpra registered allied health professional
  • medical practitioner.

If you’re eligible, you can apply for an additional provider number online through Health Professional Online Services (HPOS).

When you get your additional provider number wait 2 business days before you submit claims with the new number.

To apply for an additional provider number:

  1. Log in to HPOS using your Provider Digital Access (PRODA) account.
  2. Select My details, then My provider numbers.
  3. Select Create a new provider location and read the privacy note.
  4. Submit answers to required questions.

Log in to PRODA

Your bank details for the new location will be pending if someone you’ve nominated as a delegate creates a new location on your behalf.

You can manage your provider numbers, banking details, practice details and locations in HPOS.

You may not be able to apply for an additional provider number online.

If you can’t apply online, you’ll need to use the Application for a Medicare provider number and, or prescriber number for a medical practitioner form (HW019).

Send the completed form and your other documents to Medicare provider.

If you’re a medical practitioner, you can create an additional Medicare provider number through HPOS if you either:

  • have registered before 1 November 1996
  • are not subject to section 19AB of the Health Insurance Act 1973, and currently satisfy section 19AA through a postgraduate qualification.

You may also be eligible if you’ve trained overseas and satisfy 19AA with a postgraduate qualification.

In these cases, we’ll assess each application to determine if we can apply a 19AB exemption.

If you require a prescriber number separately, you must submit an Application for a Medicare provider number and/or prescriber number for a medical practitioner form (HW019).

Not all medical practitioners are subject to 19AB and not all 19AB exemptions are available through HPOS.

The following table shows which medical practitioners may be eligible to get a 19AB exemption through HPOS based on both:

  • field of work.
