Apply for initial provider and prescriber numbers

Apply for an initial Medicare provider number or Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) prescriber number.

Medicare provider number applications

Most Medicare provider number applications are taking up to 16 calendar days to process from the date we get your application. Some applications may take longer if the Department of Health and Aged Care need to assess them.

You can apply online for an initial Medicare provider and prescriber number if you’re a medical intern who trained in Australia or New Zealand.

You need a Provider Digital Access (PRODA) account to access Health Professional Online Services (HPOS). If you don’t have one, register for PRODA online. Then follow the steps to set up your HPOS access.

We experience a surge in applications between December and April.

To submit your manual application and prevent delays:

  1. Apply early.

Incomplete applications will be returned to you through the mail and you’ll need to start the application process from the beginning.

We process applications in order of receipt to apply procedural fairness for all applicants.

You’ll get an immediate outcome notification in your HPOS inbox if:

  • you’re an eligible medical intern applying online for your initial Medicare provider number or PBS prescriber number or both
  • we don’t need to review your supporting documents.

It may take us a few days to review any supporting documents.
