Requirements for an EDTMP

Before you prepare or review an EDTMP, check that you and your patient meet the eligibility requirements.

Health professional eligibility

You can prepare an EDTMP if you’re one of the following health professionals:

• general practitioner (GP)
• medical practitioner
• consultant psychiatrist
• consultant paediatrician.

You must have the skills, knowledge and experience needed to provide eating disorder treatment services.

Patient eligibility

Check your patient’s eligibility for an EDTMP.

Prepare an EDTMP

You can prepare an EDTMP for eligible patients with an eating disorder.

An EDTMP:

• starts on the day you prepare it
• expires 12 months later.

After 12 months, prepare a new EDTMP before your patient can access Medicare benefits for further eating disorder treatment services.

Medicare benefits aren’t payable for eating disorder treatment services after an EDTMP expires.

Refer patients for treatment services

You can refer eligible patients for eating disorder treatment services.

Eligible GPs and medical practitioners with training recognised by the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration can provide psychological eating disorder treatment services.

You can also refer patients to any of the following:

• clinical psychologists
• registered psychologists
• occupational therapists
• social workers
• dietitians.

Service limits

Service limits apply to eating disorder psychological and dietetic treatment services.

For each course of treatment, you can refer an eligible patient for up to:

• 10 eating disorder psychological treatment services
• 20 dietetic treatment services.

Patients receiving eating disorder psychological treatment services need an EDTMP review after each course of 10 services.

Bill EDTMP services

You can claim Medicare benefits for eligible EDTMP services delivered face-to-face or by telehealth.

The services you can bill depend on both your eligibility and your patient’s eligibility. Some EDTMP items can’t be billed with other consultations for the same patient on the same day.

Review an EDTMP

Review your patient’s EDTMP throughout the 12 month plan period, including after each course of 10 eating disorder psychological treatment services. With your patient’s consent, you can use HPOS to view their care plan history.
