No reasonable access to school

You might be eligible if the child you’re claiming for doesn’t have daily access to an appropriate state school.

This includes if your child can’t go to school for more than 20 school days in the year.

This may be because of any of the following:

  • It would take at least 3 hours to get to school and back.
  • There are adverse weather conditions, blocked roads or other circumstances beyond your control.
  • Your child has a disability or a health condition and needs to live full time in a special institution.

You may also get it if your work requires frequent moves and if all of the following apply:

  • You need to relocate the family for work.
  • You need to work onsite and don’t operate out of a base.
  • You relocate at least 5 times a year for work.
  • Your livelihood has an itinerant lifestyle, for example a shearer or fruit picker.
  • If your child travelled with you they’d miss at least 100 school days at a local state school a year.

It may also apply if your child lives in your second family home with at least 1 other sibling who either:

  • you get Second Home Allowance for
  • is 16 or over and gets Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY and has been eligible for Assistance for Isolated Children.
