Who can get it
You need to meet eligibility requirements to get ABSTUDY Fares Allowance.
You can get the allowance if you’re getting ABSTUDY or ABSTUDY Pensioner Education Supplement and meet 1 of the following:
- secondary student
- tertiary student
- master’s or doctorate student who doesn’t get Relocation Allowance.
You must also be studying full time and either:
- dependent and getting the higher rate of ABSTUDY when living away from home
- independent and living away from home to study because of travel time or access.
Sometimes, someone other than you can get the allowance to travel.
Who can’t get it
You can’t get the allowance if you’re either:
- an Australian Apprentice
- getting ABSTUDY as a student, but don’t meet the criteria above.
ABSTUDY Fares Allowance helps with the cost of approved travel. We work out if you can get it based on your type of travel.
If you study by distance education, you need to do an approved course with an approved education provider.
To get Fares Allowance you must be eligible for ABSTUDY. If you’re eligible we’ll pay the actual costs of travel.
