Indigenous Access Program for health professionals

Health professionals can deliver health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians through the Indigenous Access Program.

The Indigenous Access Program connects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians with our services, including health assessments.

Our Medicare Engagement Officers work with health professionals including general practitioners, Aboriginal medical services, other allied health services and Indigenous communities. They work in each state and territory across Australia. Officers have specialised cultural awareness skills and training to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customers.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Link is a free-call telephone service that supports health workers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customers. We can help with patient eligibility, Medicare cards and enrolments, and other issues and conditions that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. For more information, call the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Line.

We ask Services Australia customers if they want to identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander when applying for payments and services. This voluntary identification helps inform policies and programs we deliver. It also helps us send funding to places that need it most.

You can use Medicare forms or tell your patient about the Medicare Voluntary Indigenous Identifier form. For more information, call the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Line.

We hold all data securely. When we group information for statistics or reports, it contains no names or identifying facts.
