How to get help if you or someone you know is experiencing elder abuse

Published: 15 June 2026

Elder abuse is any act that causes harm to an older person by someone you know and trust. It can also be a form of family and domestic violence.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed on 15 June each year to highlight the importance of recognising and preventing elder abuse in our communities.

Some examples of abuse towards older people also known as elder abuse can include:

  • emotional
  • psychological
  • financial
  • physical
  • sexual
  • neglect.

If you have an acting arrangement in place but that person is not acting in your best interests, you should cancel the arrangement. You can ask someone else to help.
