The death of a child is one of the toughest experiences you can go through. If you experience pregnancy loss or neonatal death, there are support services and information you and your family may find helpful during this difficult time.
If your child was stillborn or died soon after birth, you can choose to have us provide your Parental Leave Pay directly. However, if you prefer, your employer may still provide your Parental Leave Pay to you.
Parental Leave Pay can’t be paid as a lump sum payment.
You can choose to work on a day you get Parental Leave Pay. Find out more about working on a day of Parental Leave Pay.
If you have a partner, you’ll have an exemption to the Parental Leave Pay reserved days limit. This means you can claim all the available days yourself.
It’s important you and your partner talk about if or how you will share the Parental Leave Pay days. If you decide to share the payment, you both need to make separate claims for Parental Leave Pay and be eligible.
You’ll also have an exemption to the limit for taking days of Parental Leave Pay at the same time as your partner. This means you and your partner can take some or all of these days at the same time.

Other payments you can get
If you experience stillbirth, you’ll need to decide between Parental Leave Pay and Stillborn Baby Payment.
If you experience neonatal death, you may get Parental Leave Pay and Family Tax Benefit Bereavement payments.
You may also get Newborn Upfront Payment and Newborn Supplement with your Family Tax Benefit Bereavement Payment.
You can’t get both Parental Leave Pay and Newborn Upfront Payment and Newborn Supplement for the same child.
