Centrepay business reform

We’re proposing to update the Centrepay business approval process.

Business applications

There’s a pause on new businesses joining Centrepay.

New businesses can join once the new business application process starts in mid-2025.

We’re proposing to update the business application and onboarding process. This will help give clarity to businesses to:

  • strengthen eligibility screening
  • improve business and identity checking
  • introduce a character test for businesses and its senior employees
  • tailor requirements to different service reasons
  • make sure businesses only provide goods and services for their approved service reasons
  • get businesses to explain how they’ll meet their Centrepay contract terms
  • ensure that businesses can offer other payment methods and not rely on Centrepay.

Current Centrepay registered businesses won’t need to reapply. We’ll support these businesses as we transition into the reforms.

Giving us feedback

On 31 March 2025, we began a second round of public consultation.

This round of consultation invited input and feedback from businesses, customers and the broader community on the proposed Centrepay changes. This feedback will contribute to the final Centrepay reform.
