They’re saying that all Medicare cards need to be replaced. They then ask you to pay the postage cost for a new card to be sent to you.
They may contact you by text message and say:
- your Medicare card needs to be replaced
- your Medicare card has been temporarily suspended
- you need to go to an online portal to complete the process
- your online services may be suspended if you don’t replace your card.
They may tell you to reply with a ‘Y’ to activate the link in the text message, or to copy and paste the link into your web browser.
Don’t respond or go to these suspicious websites.
You should contact your financial institution immediately if you have given your financial details to a scammer. The text message and fake website may look like these:
We won’t ask you to:
- reply to us by text message or email
- click on or copy and paste a link in a text message or email
- give your bank card details to get a replacement Medicare card
- pay for a new Medicare card to be sent to you in the mail.
If you’ve given your credit card information to a scammer, call your bank straight away.
