Registrations for the new settlement
Registrations for the new robodebt class action settlement closed on Friday 6 March. The opportunity to submit a late registration closed on Friday 15 May 2026.
Only eligible group members who registered before the late registration date will be considered for a settlement payment.
It will be up to the Federal Court to decide if it will accept late registrations.
If you’re an eligible group member and you didn’t register by 15 May 2026, please contact Gordon Legal. You only need to do this if you’d like to participate in the proposed settlement.
In November 2025, we sent notices to eligible group members about registering for the new class action settlement. The notices were sent by mail or to your myGov inbox, depending on how you choose to get your letters from us.
The notice described the new settlement and the steps group members needed to take to register.

Information about the new settlement
The robodebt class action was originally settled in 2021. In 2022, approximately $112 million in settlement payments was distributed to group members.
In September 2024, Gordon Legal appealed this settlement.
The Commonwealth and the applicants, represented by Gordon Legal, have agreed to a new settlement.
Information about the settlement process
The new settlement still needs to be approved by the Federal Court. We expect the Federal Court will be asked to approve the settlement in mid-2026.
If the new settlement is approved, the Commonwealth will pay an additional $475 million as compensation for the harm caused to eligible group members.
Eligibility for the new settlement scheme, claim assessment and payment calculation will be determined by the scheme administrator. The Federal Court will appoint the scheme administrator later.
The new settlement will include an amount up to $13.5 million for the applicants’ reasonable legal costs as determined by the Federal Court.
The new settlement will also include an amount up to $60 million for the reasonable costs of administering the settlement scheme as determined by the Federal Court.
This new settlement is in addition to the original settlement payments made in 2022 and the debts that were refunded or have been zeroed.
