Reciprocating jurisdictions and residency
We have arrangements for child support with a number of countries. We call these reciprocating jurisdictions.
How we can help
If you or the other parent live in one of these countries we can help you manage your overseas maintenance.
We will either assist:
- the parent if we can
- the authority that manages child support in that country.
Setting up maintenance for you in other countries can be complicated and take a long time. What we can do depends on:
- our arrangement with the country
- their laws and processes
Countries that are reciprocating jurisdictions
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Burkina Faso
- Canada, except Yukon and Quebec
- Cape Verde
- Central African Republic
- Czech Republic
- Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
- Holy See, The
- Hong Kong
- New Zealand
- Sierra Leone
- South Africa
- Sri Lanka
- Tanzania, except Zanzibar
- Trinidad and Tobago
- United Kingdom, includes Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark
- United States of America
These are countries that are reciprocating jurisdictions but can’t accept Australian assessments.
We can’t make a child support assessment if the other parent lives in one of these countries. You may be able to get an Australian court order which we can send to the other country.
Countries that are excluded jurisdictions
We don’t have arrangements for child support for the following countries:
- Brunei Darussalam
- Cook Islands
- Papua New Guinea
- Samoa, not American Samoa
- Yukon, in Canada.
These are any countries that aren’t on the 2 lists above.
We can’t make a child support assessment. We also can’t send an Australian court order to the other country. Call us to talk about your options.
