Fake charities and No Interest Loan Scheme scams

Scammers are posing as charities and No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) providers, like Good Shepherd, to trick people who need financial support.

These scammers are targeting customers using fake profiles and advertisements on social media. They’ll say you can borrow up to $5,000 with no interest fees or offer other financial support. They’ll ask you to complete a loan application by direct message or live chat.

The scammers may:

  • send you an online form to apply for a loan or other financial support
  • ask for your myGov sign in details and code sent by SMS
  • ask for other personal information such as identity documents, Medicare card details or Centrelink Customer Reference Number
  • ask for bank details
  • ask you to create a new bank account and provide them the username and password.

This is a scam.

You can’t apply for a No Interest Loan on social media.

No Interest Loans cannot be paid as cash into your bank account.

Never share your personal information, including your myGov sign in details with anyone on social media.

The scams may look like these examples:

Remember:

  • don’t share personal information on social media posts, live chats, private groups or direct messages
  • don’t click on links or fill out webforms in direct messages or live chats.
