Customers are being prompted to update their myGov sign in settings under a recently introduced feature to help improve their account security.

Services Australia General Manager Hank Jongen said the security feature asks you to check and update your sign in options, based on your myGov account settings.

“The security review messages are a simple way to help you upgrade your myGov account security and keep pace with safer, more modern technology,” Mr Jongen said.

“If you aren’t already using a strong sign in option, like passkeys or Digital ID, you’ll see the review option after you sign in, encouraging you to take simple steps to improve your account security.”

“If you have a passkey or Digital ID for your myGov account, you’ll be prompted to turn off your password as a sign in option. This prevents scammers from accessing your account using stolen credentials from other data breaches.”

Mr Jongen said since the feature was first introduced in December 2024, more than 2.3 million myGov users have switched to using more secure sign in options by adding passkeys or connecting Digital ID to their accounts.

“myGov is the ‘front door’ to a range of government online services, and everyone has an important role to play in keeping their account as secure as possible,” Mr Jongen said.

“Passkeys and Digital ID both offer strong protection for your myGov account.

“myGov was among the first digital government services in the world to implement passkeys over 12 months ago and since then, nearly 1.8 million passkeys have been created in myGov.

“More people are also using Digital ID to access their myGov account. Last month, there were about 3 million sign ins to myGov using Digital ID, which is close to the same number of Digital ID sign ins for the full 2023-24 financial year.

“While changing the way you sign in to myGov is your choice, it’s the best way to protect your account and the services you’ve linked from unauthorised access.”
