New Assignment of Benefit consent requirements from 1 July 2026

Published: 1 July 2026

Assignment of Benefit changes introduce updated consent requirements for bulk billing and simplified billing.

From 1 July 2026, updated requirements apply to the Assignment of Benefit process.

For bulk billing, you still need to get patient consent to assign their Medicare benefit. Now, consent can be given digitally or on paper, before or after a service, and you must keep a record of it.

These requirements also apply in hospital settings, including simplified billing arrangements with private health insurers or approved billing agents.
