Employment Services Assessments

We'll assess the impact of your disability, illness, injury or other barriers to work.

What an Employment Services Assessment is

This assessment helps us understand all of the following:

  • your barriers to work
  • your capacity to work due to disability, illness or injury
  • what type of employment services provider is best for you.

One of our qualified health or allied health professionals does the assessment. We’ll complete it over the phone, if that’s suitable for you.

Your employment services provider may refer you to us for an assessment.

What happens before the assessment

If you need to attend an assessment, we’ll contact you to make an appointment. If we do your assessment over the phone we’ll send you an SMS before we call.

There are things you may need to bring to your assessment. These include aids, equipment or assistive technology you use, such as hearing aids.

You can bring a relative, friend or an advocate to your assessment for support, if you want.

If you have any special needs you should contact us before your appointment on the number in your appointment letter. For example, contact us if you prefer an assessor to be of a specific gender to interview you.

Documents you may need to provide

Make sure you provide any new medical evidence you haven’t already given us as soon as possible.

You can upload any new medical evidence online using either your Centrelink online account or Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

You can also send it to us by mail.

If you have difficulties providing these documents, you can discuss this during your appointment.

What happens during the assessment

Your assessor will talk to you about all of the following:

  • any barriers to work you may have, including any medical conditions
  • any recent help or rehabilitation you’ve had
  • services to help you find and keep a job, if needed.

They may also contact your treating health professional if they need more details about your condition.

They’ll tell you which employment services program is right for you. This may include any of the following:

  • jobactive
  • Disability Employment Services
  • the Community Development Program, if you live in a remote area.

Once your assessor determines the right employment services program for you, we’ll ask you to choose your preferred provider.

To help you choose a provider, your assessor may discuss provider services. Not all providers offer the same services.

You can find out more about these services before your appointment. This includes who the providers are in your area and what services they offer.

  • by calling the Employment Services National Customer Service Line on 1800 805 260 to learn more about employment services
  • on the JobAccess website
  • by calling a JobAccess adviser on 1800 464 800 to talk about Disability Employment Services.

What to do if you can’t attend your appointment

Call us on the number shown in your appointment letter if you can’t attend your appointment.

If the appointment time doesn’t suit, you can arrange another time to complete the assessment with the assessor.

What happens if you don’t attend your assessment

If you don’t attend your appointment we may stop your payment.

What happens after your assessment

Your assessor will write a report, which details any identified barriers to work. The report will detail how they may affect your ability to work or participate in employment services.

Tell us if you want a copy of your report. We can usually give you one. In some circumstances you’ll need to make a formal Freedom of Information request.

Your privacy

The law protects your personal information. The assessor will explain how we’ll use your information.
