STP is an Australian Government initiative to reduce employers’ reporting burden to government agencies.
In 2018 employers started reporting employee payroll information to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) through STP-enabled software. This included all of the following:
- salary and wages
- pay as you go (PAYG) withholding
In 2022, the ATO expanded the data collected through STP, and is sharing it with other government agencies. The expansion, known as STP Phase 2, will support the social security system.
At Services Australia, we’ll improve our services by using the information employers send to the ATO through STP to make reporting simpler for customers.
Reporting employment income
Watch our video to learn how we’ve made reporting employment income simpler.
Centrelink payment customers will be some of the first to experience improvements from STP data in our services.
Pre-filling income and employer information won’t start for everyone at the same time. It will depend on when your employer starts reporting the additional information. This will happen gradually over 2022.
Until then, customers getting Centrelink payments may have some, all or no information pre-filled into their employment income reports.
Customers are responsible for making sure their reports and claims are true, accurate and not missing any information. Getting reporting right helps us pay them the right amount.
