Selection process

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in our tailored selection process.

We work with Employ for Ability to deliver a supportive, inclusive and merit-based recruitment process.

Aurora is designed to reduce barriers that people with an autism or ADHD diagnosis may experience in traditional recruitment processes. Instead of formal interviews or psychometric testing, you’ll take part in practical activities that help demonstrate your skills, strengths and suitability for available roles.

Employ for Ability supports candidates throughout the process and helps managers and teams create inclusive workplaces where people can thrive.

There are 5 steps in the selection process.

Step 1: pre-screening workshop

If you’re shortlisted after submitting your online application, you’ll be invited to attend a pre-screening workshop facilitated by Employ for Ability.

During the workshop you’ll:

  • learn more about the available roles
  • take part in practical activities
  • demonstrate your skills and strengths.

If you’re shortlisted after this stage, you’ll be invited to participate in the assessment program.

Step 2: assessment program

The assessment program includes practical workplace activities in a face-to-face environment, led by Services Australia.

During this program you’ll:

  • complete individual and group activities
  • demonstrate skills relevant to the role
  • meet agency managers and team members
  • undertake assessment tasks aligned to the position.

After the assessment program, we’ll identify candidates who are suitable for available roles.

If you’re not selected for a Services Australia role, you may be considered for other Employ for Ability opportunities.

Step 3: pre-employment check

Before we can offer you employment, you’ll need to complete pre-employment checks, including a criminal history check.

We’ll support you throughout the process and help you complete the required documentation.

Step 4: job offer

If you’re successful, we’ll offer you either a non-ongoing or an ongoing position with Services Australia, depending on business requirements.

Step 5: support

Before you start, you’ll complete the Employ for Ability Work Ready Program.

We’ll work with you to develop an individual employee success plan and identify any workplace adjustments you may need.

You’ll also receive support through:

  • a workplace study
  • a dedicated neurodiversity coach
  • ongoing support from Employ for Ability.

Managers and teams receive neurodiversity training to help create an inclusive workplace.

You’ll also be matched with a buddy before starting in the role. Buddies will help you settle into the agency and the APS.
