Indexed list of files

We’re required, under Senate Order 12, to produce and publish indexed lists of our file titles created throughout the year.

All Australian Government departments, agencies and statutory authorities need to produce an indexed list of their file titles for tabling before Parliament on a biannual basis, every 6 months.

The reporting periods are:

  • January to June
  • July to December.

Once tabled, the listings of file titles are made available to the public on our website.

The purpose of this process is to make the operations of government more transparent to the Australian public and to facilitate Freedom of Information (FOI).

What the order includes

This order includes, but isn’t limited to, files relating to:

  • policy advising functions
  • the development of legislation
  • matters of public administration.

The order doesn’t include:

  • files transferred to the National Archives of Australia
  • case-related files
  • files essentially related to the internal administration of a department or agency.

Indexed lists

From 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2025, our listings were published on the Department of Social Services website.
