When can you get a payment as a part-time student?

Published: 24 March 2023

There are some circumstances where you don’t have to study full-time to get Youth Allowance or Austudy.

If you can’t study full-time, let us know. We may still be able to pay you if you have a medical condition or illness. You’ll need to have proof that you’re unable to study full-time temporarily.

It can also still apply if either:

  • the university has cancelled a subject
  • you have a timetable clash and can’t study something else.

If you can’t study full-time or you’ve stopped studying, let us know within 14 days. Read more about when your circumstances change.
