When are you considered to be a full time student?

7 March 2023

If you want to claim Austudy or Youth Allowance as a tertiary student, you usually need to study full time.

To be a full time student, you must study 75% of your course’s full time study load.

If your study load changes, or you can’t study full time, you must tell us. Under some circumstances we can still pay you.

Tell us about any changes within 14 days, this includes if you:

  • change your course or education provider
  • reduce your study load
  • withdraw from your course.

If you don’t, you may need to pay us money back.

Read more about study loads and when your circumstances change.
