Student Start-up Loan is extra money while you study

11 July 2022

Getting Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY Living Allowance? Borrow up to $2,264 extra each year to help cover costs.

You can apply now for the second annual Student Start-up Loan, a set amount of $1,132. The second loan period is from 1 July to 31 December.

If you applied for the loan when you claimed your student payment, we’ll pay it in early July. We don’t pay the Student Start-up Loan automatically. You need to apply for it and meet the eligibility requirements. You usually need to be studying at a university, though some TAFEs and private providers are also eligible.

As it’s a loan, you also need to pay it back. You usually do this when you start earning a high enough income.
