Medical interns - register online and save time
9 December 2019
Some interns can apply online to get their Medicare provider number.
You need to have a Medicare provider number (MPN) to refer or request services for Medicare benefits from us.
We’ll send you an email if you’re eligible to apply online. Then you can follow these 3 simple steps:
- create a Provider Digital Access (PRODA) account
- link your account to the Health Professionals Online Service (HPOS)
- apply for your MPN.
In most cases you’ll get your number straight away. If you need to send us supporting documents, it will take a bit longer.
You can apply for a prescriber number at the same time.
If you can’t go online, you’ll need to complete an Application for a Medicare provider number and, or prescriber number for a medical practitioner form (HW019).
Make sure you apply early to get your MPN before you start your internship. We get lots of applications during December to April. Your application may take longer during these months.
