Changes to jobactive for newly arrived refugees

2 January 2020

From 1 January 2020, we won’t refer newly arrived refugees to jobactive until they’ve been in Australia for 12 months.

The changes affect newly arrived refugees when both of the following apply:

  • They get an income support payment with mutual obligation requirements.
  • They have a 12 week newly arrived refugee exemption that ends on or after 1 January 2020.

First 12 weeks in Australia

There are no changes for the first 12 weeks in Australia. They’ll continue to get an exemption from mutual obligation requirements until they’ve been in Australia for 12 weeks.

At the end of 12 weeks

Newly arrived refugees must go to a service centre at the end of their 12 week exemption.

During this contact, we’ll create a Job Plan with them. The plan lasts until they’ve been in Australia for 12 months. We’ll add approved activities they’ve agreed to. These activities may include taking part in any of the following:

  • programs to help them become a part of the community
  • programs to improve their language skills
  • other approved work, study or training.

After 12 months in Australia

They must go to an appointment with us after they’ve been in Australia for 12 months. We’ll review their situation and in most cases, refer them to a jobactive provider. The jobactive provider will create a new Job Plan with them.

Option to access jobactive earlier

Help is available if they want to find a job before they’ve been in Australia for 12 months. They can ask us to refer them to a jobactive provider after they’ve been in Australia for 6 weeks. They will still need to attend a service centre after their 12 week exemption ends and create a Job Plan. They’ll get a level of help from jobactive that’s matched to their needs.
