Indigenous Apprenticeships Program – Adam moves into social work at Services Australia to help others find confidence
I’m Adam and I work for Services Australia.
I was first aware of the Indigenous Apprenticeships program (IAP) when a friend sent me the link via Facebook. At first I thought I wouldn’t be good enough for this kind of job due to my lack of education. However, the opportunity was too good to pass up—so I applied for the 2018 intake and I’ve never looked back.
My indigenous heritage is Wiradjuri, from Cowra in Central West New South Wales. Before the IAP I was a flight attendant for Virgin Australia. Currently I’m a Case Manager for the Intensive Collections team at Services Australia in Brisbane.
I like that there are so many opportunities available with the IAP. For the past 12 months, I’ve worked in Business Integrity. This is where we recover money owed to the Commonwealth. We assess a customer’s ability to repay money owed in a sustainable and efficient way. I’m very excited about this work and without the IAP, I would have never had an opportunity like this.
Through my apprenticeship I was also able to complete the Diploma in Government. This has inspired me to continue further studies. In the future, I would like to become a social worker. I’ve started job shadowing social workers in Services Australia to get a feel for it and understand the service they provide.
I would also like to move into an operational leader position. And further down the track into some form of management. The opportunities are endless and the support is outstanding in the IAP.
I’ve built strong relationships with other apprentices. This foundation allows me to have a successful career in the public sector. Outside of work, I enjoy activities like hiking in the Glasshouse Mountains or trekking through waterfalls in the Hinterland. There’s always something to do or somewhere to go.
