Services Australia has made sure local residents still have access to essential government services after flood damage forced the closure of the Mossman office in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

Mobile Service Centre Desert Rose is stationed in the town to support the community in the immediate aftermath of the flood emergency, as well as provide face-to-face help with general Medicare and Centrelink business, and referrals to other government services.

Desert Rose is a 20-tonne office on wheels, with all the functionality and technology of a regular service centre. Desert Rose manager Jade Sadler has worked hand in hand with local staff to establish the mobile service centre in Mossman.

"The days have been long and hot up here and we’re doing everything we can to make sure customers are as comfortable as possible – whether that’s buying fans to keep people cool or filling an eski with bottled water for them to drink while they wait to be served,” Ms Sadler said.

“Our staff live in the region too which means they’re also picking up the pieces after this emergency. They’re putting all of that aside to support their community and deliver the same level of service they would in a service centre.”

Services Australia General Manager Hank Jongen says while work continues to secure a more permanent Mossman Service Centre, the best way for people to complete their business is online.

“We have a proud history of supporting Queenslanders through disaster like this, and we’re making sure no one in the community is left behind,” Mr Jongen said.

“Our staff are always happy to help, but you don’t need to visit us in person if you’d like to claim a payment – using your myGov account is the fastest way to complete your business if you have the option.

“You can do everything from claiming payments, updating your personal details, and reporting your income. This also applies for flood support payments like the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment and the Disaster Recovery Allowance.”
