Students and trainees

If you're a student or Australian Apprentice and get a student payment from us you may get some extra payments. This is due to coronavirus.

Additional payments

You may get the Coronavirus Supplement from late April 2020. You may also get the first Economic Support Payment. We'll pay this into your bank account automatically.

You won’t get the second Economic Support Payment in July 2020 if you get the Coronavirus Supplement.

Students

You’ll keep getting your student payment if you stay enrolled in your course, and plan to return to study. Even if 1 of the following apply:

  • you’re self-isolated at home
  • your education provider temporarily closes or reduces your study load.

Tell us

Call us on the students line to tell us if any of the following happen:

  • you don't stay enrolled in your course
  • you don't plan to return to study
  • your education provider reduces your study load
  • you’re getting the away from home rate of payment from us and not maintaining your term address.

Maintaining your term address means keeping the address by still paying rent. You may want to do this even if you’ve moved back home during the term.

If you get ABSTUDY, call the ABSTUDY line instead.

Travel home before the end of the school term

You can use ABSTUDY end of term travel if both of the following apply:

  • you get ABSTUDY
  • your school or boarding provider tells you to travel home before the end of the school term because of coronavirus.

ABSTUDY boarders

We’ll still make payments for term 2 to your school, boarding provider or a person you nominate. But all of these must apply:

  • we approved you for boarding entitlements in term 1
  • your boarding provider holds a board place for you for term 2
  • you intend to return to board as soon as possible in term 2
  • your school or boarding school continues to support you to study remotely using other methods such as online.

Tell us if any of the following happen:

  • you enrol in another school
  • you change your boarding place for term 2
  • there are any other changes to your circumstances.

You must let us know if anything changes so you don’t get overpaid. You can do this by calling the ABSTUDY line.

Assistance for Isolated Children

We’ll keep paying Basic Boarding Allowance and Additional Boarding Allowance in term 2. But all of these must apply:

  • your board provider holds a board place for you for term 2
  • you intend to return to board as soon as possible in term 2
