Students and trainees - coronavirus (COVID-19)

If you're a student or Australian Apprentice and get a student payment from us you may get some extra payments. This is due to coronavirus.

There are changes to claims and your obligations due to coronavirus (COVID-19). This includes changes to waiting periods, the income test, what you need to give us, and your obligations. We’ve suspended participation requirements for Disability Support Pension. We’ve also paused a range of Centrelink debt raising and recovery activities.

Additional payments

You may get the Coronavirus Supplement from late April 2020. You may also get the first Economic Support Payment. These will be paid as part of your normal payment.

You won’t get the second Economic Support Payment in July 2020 if you get the Coronavirus Supplement.

Students

You’ll continue to get your student payment if you remain enrolled in your course, and plan on returning to study. Even if 1 of the following apply:

  • you’re self-isolated at home
  • your education provider temporarily closes or reduces your study load.

Tell us

Call us on the students line to tell us if any of the following happen:

  • you don't remain enrolled in your course
  • you don't plan on returning to study
  • your education provider reduces your study load
  • you’re getting the away from home rate of payment from us and you’re no longer maintaining your term address.

If you get ABSTUDY, call the ABSTUDY line instead.

Travel home before the end of the school term

You can use ABSTUDY end of term travel if both of the following apply:

  • you get ABSTUDY
  • your school or boarding provider tells you to travel home before the end of the school term because of coronavirus.

If this is the case, we’ll still make payments by instalment to your school or boarding provider.

Australian Apprentices

You’ll continue to get your fortnightly payment if your Commonwealth Registration Number remains current.

You’ll need to call us on the Australian Apprenticeships line if your Commonwealth Registration Number is suspended or cancelled.

Away from home rate

If you get the away from home rate of payment from us, you can continue to get the higher rate. If you’re no longer living away from home, you’ll need to meet the following conditions.
