Living overseas

Wife Pension payments stopped on 20 March 2020. If you were getting Wife Pension when it stopped, we may have transferred you to Age Pension.

You were transferred to Age Pension if on 19 March 2020 all of the following applied:

  • you were living overseas
  • you were Age Pension age
  • you were getting Wife Pension.

If you transferred to Age Pension, you’ll get the same payment rate as you were getting on Wife Pension.

If you’re not Age Pension age but you live overseas, you may get a payment under an international social security agreement. You can check to see if you live in a country that has an international social security agreement with Australia.

You may no longer be eligible for an Australian social security payment from 20 March 2020 if all these apply:

  • you live overseas
  • you’re under Age Pension age
  • you don’t qualify for a payment under an international social security agreement.

We sent you a letter to tell you in advance about the payment stopping on 20 March 2020.

Returning to Australia

If you return to Australia, you may have to wait to get a new payment or concession card. Read more about waiting periods and newly arrived resident’s waiting period.

Use the Payment and Service Finder to see what payments you may get.
